Artist's Statement
Hi, I’m Mark Brierley, aka Briles. I’m a Somerville-based photographer who loves to explore it all.
I’m constantly paying attention to the wondrous, funny, quiet, and interesting moments happening around me, wherever I am in the world. Part photographer, part documentarian, part patient observer, and part full-time goofball, I love sharing the sights and sites I’ve captured during my travels, hikes, neighborhood wanderings, and everyday adventures.
My work includes images from travels across the United States and abroad, along with photographs made closer to home in Somerville, around Massachusetts, and throughout New England. The collection features travel photography, landscapes, street scenes, birds, wildlife, gardens, architecture, and anything that captures my attention or brings me joy.
For Somerville Open Studios, I’ll be sharing a selection of framed and unframed photographic prints, including images from domestic and international travel, local hikes, wildlife encounters, backyard discoveries, and the curious little moments the world offers up when you’re paying attention.
I’m also excited to share pieces from my Berkeley St. Backyard Series, a playful collection of images captured right here in the neighborhood: bunnies, cardinals, squirrels, dahlias, bees, garden details, insects, and the tiny wild dramas unfolding just outside the door.
Visitors can browse ready-to-display framed pieces, unframed prints, and works that can be ordered in additional sizes.
Whether you’re looking for a print that reminds you of a favorite place, a conversation piece for your wall, a gift for a fellow bird nerd, a small tribute to someone you miss, or simply a visual escape hatch from the ordinary, I invite you to come take a Briles’ Eye-View of the world with me.
