Artist's Statement
Denise D. Price is a paper engineer, illustrator, paper artist, and independent publisher. Her work spans ephemera, illustration, paper sculptures, and pop-up engineering. Some pieces are one of a kind, while others are reproduced commercially, including her pop-up book of Boston.
Paper engineering brings an exactness to her art. Whether the subject is abstract or familiar, the mechanics of transforming paper into three-dimensional movement are central to her practice. Working in this medium shifts the experience from that of a passive viewer to an active participant. The art does not fully come to life until it is handled, opened, and explored, creating moments of surprise and interaction that are essential to her work.
Beyond pop-up books, her passion for storytelling extends into publishing projects that intentionally conclude with a hands-on craft element. This includes The Ghost, an illustrated book that blends narrative, place, and memory, and ends with a paper craft designed to deepen the reader’s emotional connection to the story.
With six biographies released in the Movable Icons series, each detailing the extraordinary lives of cultural, scientific, and creative pioneers, and three more forthcoming, her work continues to honor legacy through story, movement, and craft. The Movable Icons series is available wherever books are sold, including Amazon.
