Artist's Statement
My ceramic forms are built with thick slabs and fat coils. I redefiine the the piece, drawing lines and pattern on the forms and then carve these these lines deeply into the clay walls. As I carve clay away, I reattatch it to follow the carved lines, growing the piece and melding the design and form into one statement.
My most current sculpture references landscape. They are my visual and emotional interpretations of space, recreating the colors and patterns I see along with how I feel while immersed the world. I imagine myself inches tall, wandering through the curves and planes of each piece. My palette is found in the natural world. I am always looking for unique color combinations while walking through the woods and in the city. I have created a collection of 70- 80 glaze colors to bring some of my discoveries into my work.
I divide my time between studio work for local galleries, commission work, teaching at Mudflat Studios, Indigo Fire and leading MCC grant funded school based ceramic projects. Every month brings a different adventure in clay for me.
